We are pleased to announce that with support from the United States Department of State, Partners of the America will recruit 10 U.S. youth (15-18 years) living in the U.S. states/territories listed below for the 2017 Youth Ambassadors Program. Applicants should be interested in learning more about South America, practicing Spanish, becoming better leaders and volunteers, and connecting with youth from different ethnic, religious and national groups.

Participants from the following U.S. states/territories are welcome to apply: AR, GA, KS, MN, MO, NC, NE, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, WY and the Washington, DC area (DC and Virginia’s Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria counties and Maryland’s Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are welcome to apply).

Partners of the Americas will also recruit one adult mentor from the aforementioned qualifying states/territories who will assume the important responsibility of accompanying and guiding youth through their experience and motivate the youth to be active participants before, during and after the exchange. The selected youth and adult mentor will be convened in to Washington, D.C., and then travel together to Colombia from July 5th to July 30th, 2017. All applications with required attachments must be submitted electronically by February 28th, 2017 at 11:59 PM. Finalists will be notified by April, 2017!

  • Appreciate similarities and differences between the U.S. and Colombia as well as South America in general;
  • Learn about Colombia’s fascinating history, culture, politics, environment and language(s);
  • Develop the skills needed to be a positive leader in your community;
  • Explore societal challenges and create a service project for your community;
  • Connect to a network of volunteers/community leaders including other youth throughout the hemisphere.

Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to participate: 

  • Be between 15-18 years old at date of travel (July 5th);
  • Currently enrolled in a high school and have at least one semester remaining after July 30th;
  • Good academic standing;
  • Display leadership qualities and potential;
  • Have volunteer experience and a real commitment to serving others;
  • Be able to communicate effectively in Spanish;
  • Be a U.S. Citizen.

Applications of eligible candidates will be reviewed and finalists will be contacted by Partners staff for an interview. In addition to the above criteria, candidates will be judged on their dedication to service and community, ability to adapt to new situations and environments, and maturity and responsibility. 

Partners of the Americas, with US State Department funding, will pay all expenses related to participation in the program including domestic and international flights, meals, accident and sickness protection, required vaccinations, some spending money, and lodging.

Applicant Check-list:

1. Submit a copy of your completed application form

2. Form of identification that verifies U.S. citizenship (i.e. a birth certificate, U.S. passport, citizenship certificate, but no ID or Driver´s License will be accepted);

3. A copy of your school record for 2016-2017;

4. Two letters of recommendation from your teachers, the school principal, advisers, or mentors (not from parents). A letter from a Spanish teacher is recommended if Spanish is not spoken at home.

This application includes three major sections:

2. Application & Signatures (requires parent/guardian information, short essay responses, biographical information) 

3. Attachments (verification of U.S. citizenship, academic record for 2016-17, and recommendation letters)
