Host(s): District of Columbia Chapter; Iracambi Rainforest Research Center

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced us all to pause, reevaluate, and reimagine both what we do and how we do it. At the Iracambi Rainforest Research Center in Brazil, their focus is on research and education, ecosystem restoration, and public policy. In a normal year, Iracambi hosts dozens of international students and volunteers to work on the challenges of reconciling biodiversity conservation with sustainability. Iracambi also introduces dozens of local school kids to their first taste of rainforest science. COVID-19 changed all this, and now Iracambi is embarking on an ambitious program to plant 55,000 trees by the end of 2022, to store carbon, help stabilize the climate, and provide habitat for rainforest fauna so that zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 can stay where they belong.
