Overview

Partners of the Americas (“Partners”) and the United Nations share a similar mission.  Partners’ mission is to connect people and organizations across and within borders to serve and change lives.  The UN’s 2030 agenda for sustainable development provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.  Partners strives to implement programs with a focus on long-term impact, environmental protection and climate change preparedness.  The Communities of Practice on Education & Global Citizenship and the Environment & Climate Change will present a series of webinars that highlight the people and organizations across the hemisphere that focus on sustainable development and climate action.

Leading off the series is A Call to Action on Biodiversity, with Binka Le Breton, on Sunday, March 26, at 5pm eastern.  Binka is co-founder and director of the Iracambi Rainforest Research Center in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest. Non-profit Iracambi is located in one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots: Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, and works with an integrated program of research, education, volunteering and ecological restoration. Their goal is to plant one million native forest trees by 2030.  Binka will provide a brief overview of biodiversity: what it is, and why it matters, and will then present the work of Iracambi in preserving biodiversity and combating climate change.

Juliet Le Breton will discuss the UN Sustainable Development goals, and bring us highlights from COP 15 the UN Conference on Biodiversity held in Montreal in December 2022, on protecting nature and halting biodiversity loss around the world. As a delegate from Iracambi, Juliet was present when the Atlantic Forest Pact, for which Iracambi is a regional hub, was selected by the UN as one of 10 World Restoration Flagships.

We plan to have breakout sessions where attendees can discuss biodiversity initiatives they could undertake in their own communities.  Come with your ideas!

Binka Le Breton

Concert pianist turned author turned environmentalist, Binka is co-founder and director of the Iracambi Rainforest Research Center in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest where she works in communications, translations, networking and international relations.  An experienced speaker on the international circuit, Binka spends several weeks on the road every year, making friends, creating partnerships and networking with environmental defenders across the hemisphere. In her spare time she is currently studying spoken Mandarin, while freely admitting she may never master Chinese characters.

Juliet LeBreton

Juliet specializes in communications for social and behavior change, and works at the intersection of sustainability and environmental management. Her gift is to pull order out of complexity, and she is equally at home in a variety of UN agencies, non-profits, and working directly with stakeholder groups. During covid she headed a highly successful initiative that sourced and provided innovative oxygen masks to isolated clinics and health workers in rural Africa, saving lives and helping people breathe. She has recently relocated to Europe and is thoroughly enjoying the benefits of regular water, electricity and internet access.

You can read more about Iracambi here, and you can contact Juliet at juliet@lebretonconsulting.com.
