Title: Virtual MOSTRA XI: Brazilian Film Series 2020
Chapter: Illinois
Location of the Grant: Virtual Duration: 11/4/20 - 11/29/20
Description of the Grant: The project serves to enhance interest for social and cultural experiences between the United States and Brazil by presenting concepts of equality and social transformation through films and live topic discussions on issues presented in both countries. The 2020 event consisted of 10 discussions for each feature film presented plus one short film and one feature related to gender in the US. In Brazil, there were six discussions for each feature film presented plus two discussions on short films: one on gender and one on race. As a result, we saw greater awareness of social challenges that Brazil faces and their similarities in the United States. The universities also included a showing of films with participation of faculty in the discussions. In Brazil support from the Instituto Estadual de Cinema was key to attracting cultural organizations as far as Rio Grande do Sul. The event was held virtually and reached a much larger audience than had it been available in person only.
