Yachaykuna Project

Chapter: Peru

Location of the Grant  Provincia Huaraz, Region Ancash

Duration:  08/15/2021 - 02/15/2022

Description of the Grant:
The Yachaykuna Project seeks to develop a teaching model more appropriate for children in rural areas of Peru by improving teacher capacity. Education in the Peruvian rural areas is one of the most ignored services in the country, and although, the government has implemented initiatives to promote quality education in all sectors, there is still significantly inferior to the urban areas. For example, many rural children do not have formal teachers, or if they do, these are not as well prepared as those in capital cities. Thus, many rural students only complete a primary school education and some chose to completely leave the educational system. Additionally, there is an issue of teacher absenteeism and vacancies due to the posts being in remote areas and many teachers' desire to teach closer to home.

The program hopes to address these issues in the province of Huaraz, the northern region of Ancash in Peru. This is a community that has approximately 150 children, of which 15 attend the nearby school. The remaining Uchuyaco children either don’t go to school or need to travel to another community to attend primary school. Further, the school present has only three teachers to handle students in all grades from kindergarten through sixth grade. Through virtual technology, the program will train students from the National University Santiago Antunez de Mayola in practical teaching, leadership, and project design to better meet the needs of the community school.
